[로컬세계 윤민식 기자] 제주도 수월봉은 높이 77m의 작은 언덕형태 오름으로 제주도에서 가장 아름다운 일몰을 볼 수 있는 곳으로 유명하다.
세계지질학 연구에 있어 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하는 곳이다.
약 1만 8000년 전 지하에서 상승하던 마그마가 물을 만나 강력하게 폭발하며 뿜어져 나온 화산재들이 쌓이면서 형성된 응회환의 일부인 이곳은 해안절벽을 따라 드러난 화산쇄설암층에서 다양한 화산 퇴적구조가 관찰돼 화산학 연구의 교과서로 불리고 있다.

이곳 해변에 서서 바다를 바라보노라면 유구한 지구의 역사 앞에 인간이란 얼마나 하찮은 존재인지를 새삼 깨닫게 된다.
