로컬세계 주니어기자단이 지난 19일 ‘한국의 이튼스쿨’ 청심국제중고등학교를 찾았다. 경기도 가평에 있는 청심국제학교는 2006월 개교한 특성화 국제교다. 학생 개인 책상이 제공되는 도서관은 물론 최상의 시설과 잘 짜인 교육 과정으로 학생의 역량을 끌어내는 학교로 명성이 높다. 청심하면 떠오르는 ‘공부 잘하는 학생’보다는 이타적 품성, 창의적 지식을 갖춘 글로벌 리더 양성을 위해 힘쓴다. 청심 구석구석을 돌아보며 몸소 느낀 학생들의 탐방기와 이충실 청심국제중고등학교장 인터뷰를 소개한다.

 “창의력 키워 글로벌 인재 육성”
대학진학보다도 더 중요한 것은
인성과 지식 고루 갖춘 참지식인
수업 외에 다양한 활동 자기 개발

“좋은 학교의 기준은 대학진학보다도 학생들이 창의력을 발휘하도록 동기를 부여하는 것입니다” 이충실 청심국제중고등학교장은 기자단과 만남에서 인성과 지식을 고루 갖춘 창의적 인재 육성 방안을 강조했다. 청심의 교육 목표는 ‘ACG교육(이타적 품성교육, 창의적 지식교육, 글로벌리더 전문교육)’으로 요약된다. 지난해 9월부터 제2대 교장으로 부임해 청심을 이끌고 있는 이충실 교장에게 청심국제중고등학교의 특성에 대해 물었다. 다음은 1문1답.

주니어기자단 : 청심국제중고등학교의 교육이 세계일류교육으로 발전하기까지 많은 노력을 기울였을 것으로 본다.

이충실 교장 : 청심은 학생들에게 가치를 추구하고 엄청난 창의력을 발휘하는 모티브를 많이 주는 학교다. 최고수준의 선생님들이 토론식 수업을 진행한다. 국어와 국사를 제외한 전 과목에서 영어로 수업이 진행된다. 또한 교과과정 이외에도 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 있다.

기자단 : 학생들의 교육을 얼마나 지원하는가. 장학금은 어느 정도인지 궁금하다.

이 교장 : 매년 학교 재단에서는 학생들 교육을 위해 40억원 가량을 지원한다. 사실상 전교생이 장학생이라고 할 수 있을 만큼이다. 청심에 다니는 학생들은 많은 돈을 내고 다니는 것 같지만 사실은 재단에서 학생을 위해 투자하는 금액이 크다”

기자단 : 교과과정 이외에도 다양한 활동을 지원한다고 들었다. 학교생활 이외에 학생들은 어떤 활동에 참여하고 있는가.

이 교장 : 청심의 학생들은 수업 이외에도 많은 활동에 참여하고 있다. 개인동아리활동, 과제연구활동, 수행평가활동, 체육활동 등에 참여한다. 이밖에 교외 봉사활동과 50개가 넘는 다양한 방과 후 프로그램 활동을 통해 문학, 미술, 음악 등 학생들이 가진 다양한 재능을 계발할 수 있다.

기자단 : 청심은 모든 학생들에게 태권도를 가르치고 있다. 언제부터 시행했으며 그 동기는 무엇인가.

이 교장 : 태권도는 청심이 개교 때부터 학생들이 참여하도록 한 프로그램이다. 태권도는 우리나라의 국기로서, 국위선양을 하는데 큰 역할을 한다. 학생들의 정신과 자세를 지키는 운동이며 공부에도 좋은 영향을 준다고 생각한다.

기자단 : 청심국제중고등학교에 대해서 잘 알 수 있었던 자리였다. 마지막으로 주니어 기자단에게 하고 싶은 말이 있다면.

이 교장 : 여행을 많이 다니고 많이 보고 느껴라. 많은 것을 경험하고 자신의 목표를 위해 노력하길 바란다. 그냥 이루어지는 것은 세상에 아무것도 없다. ‘어느날 갑자기 침대에서 일어나니까 세계 대통령이더라’라고 말한다면 그것은 100% 거짓말이다. 무언가를 이루려면 수많은 노력과 준비가 뒷받침돼야 한다. 지식과 지혜를 바탕으로 자신감을 갖고 용기를 내야 한다. 기자단 학생들도 꿈을 향해 차근차근 나아갔으면 한다. 앞으로 대한민국의 인재, 나아가 역사의 주인공이 되길 바란다.

Cheong Shim International Middle and Senior School, which is located in Gyeong-gi do, is a school where they use ACG Education as the educational model, which means Altruistic, Creative, and Global Education. They apply for the curriculums to create the global leaders in the future. Students who have identified their future paths and are committed to achieving goals invariably associate Cheong Shim. The following interview was conducted with Cheong Shim’s principal, Lee Choong-shil.
Junior Reporter : What have you been doing to develop Cheong Shim’s education globally?
Principal Lee : One of the benchmarks of an exceptional school is the number of students who go on to higher education at top flight universities. However, while Cheong Shim also strives to place its students in these universities, they still actively encourage creativity, self motivation, and help students recognize and draw their individual talents. To do this, we have various programs that are tailored to meet students’ needs.
Junior Reporter : Please tell us about Cheong Shim’s scholarships.
Principal Lee : For our education, we are getting four billion won annually, and we are being supported a lot that every student is getting a scholarship.
Junior Reporter : What do the students of Cheong Shim do when they are out of classes?
Principal Lee : Our school offers students over fifty individual programs including a combination of research assignments, membership in an assortment of clubs, participation in various sports, and extra-curricular activities.
Junior Reporter : When did you include Tae-kwon do into the school programs and why?
Principal Lee : Tae-kwon do was one of our school programs since we started the school as it is a form of cultural activity which is of particular significance to Korea. I believe it has a huge effect of the mind and attitude in education.
Junior Reporter : What is it that you want to tell us the most?
Principal Lee : Travel a lot, experience many things, and feel it. “If you would make the most of yourself, you must have courage.” Without hard work, nothing is possible. “I woke up one day and found that I was a world leader” is 100 percent a lie. To achieve something, there needs to be hard work, and courage made out of confidence which is made of wisdom and knowledge. I hope Junior Reporters will never give up and take little steps toward their goals and become leaders of the world and heroes of Korea. 

청심국제중고등학교 탐방
최상의 프로그램·시설
역시 국제특성화 학교!

청심은 2006년 3월에 개교하여 올해 6년째 접어드는 국제특성화 학교다. 학교 측은 수준 높은 교육 서비스와 시설 그리고 전인교육의 교육 풍토 등을 자랑한다. 청심국제교는 글로벌리더를 꿈꾸는 청소년들에게 있어 꿈의 학교로 불린다.

청심국제교 관계자에 따르면 학생 전원이 기숙사 생활을 한다. 아침식사 후 30분 동안 신문을 정독하는 스케줄이 특징이다. 정규수업은 오전 8시10분에 시작해 오후 3시40분까지 이어진다. 

정규수업 이후의 시간은 학생 스스로 선택한다. 직접 짠 시간표에 따라 필요한 수업을 선택해 듣는다. 학급당 학생수는 25명이다. 교사 1인당 9명의 학생을 담당한다. 수업 방식은 철저하게 토론식이며 단순 암기위주의 학습 대신, 자기주도적 학습과 창의적 학습을 강조한다.

국어, 국사를 제외한 전 과목은 영어로 진행된다. 대신 영어 과목이 없다. 학생들은 영어를 기본적으로 사용하며 제2외국어로 중국어, 스페인어, 일본어 등을 선택해서 배운다. 

청심국제교는 수업 이외에 시설 또한 잘 갖추어져 있다는 것이 장점이다. 1만여 권이 넘는 장서를 보유하고 있는 도서관에 이어 열람실 또한 인상적이다. 학교 측은 전교생에게 개인용 책상을 배정했다. 전교생이 청평의 아름다운 자연을 마주하고 공부하는 셈이다.

청심국제교의 교육목표는 이타적 품성, 창의적 지식을 갖춘 글로벌 리더 양성이다. 학교 관계자는 “청심은 학생들에게 공부만 시키는 학교가 아니다. 올바른 품성을 가진 국제적 인재로 육성하기 위해 다양한 활동을 제공한다”고 강조했다. 

이상적 교육을 위해 학교에서는 다양한 방과후 프로그램들을 진행한다. 일반 교과 과정 이외에 음악, 미술 등 특수능력 향상 프로그램이 제공된다. 학생들은 자율적 동아리 활동을 통해 음악, 문학, 미술, 체육 영역에서 소질을 계발할 수 있다.

수준 높은 교수진도 청심의 자랑이다. 석·박사학위 취득자가 70%를 넘는다. 대부분이 명문대 출신 교사다. 외국인 교사와 한국인 교사의 비율은 2:8 정도다. 학생들은 다양한 형태로 연간 3억원에서 4억원에 달하는 교육지원을 받는다.

학교가 제공하는 수준 높은 교육서비스 및 시설, 자기주도적 학습 환경 등을 고려하면, 청심은 유학을 가지 않아도 유학의 효과를 낼 수 있는 국제특성화 학교다. 이 때문에 학생들의 호응도가 상당히 좋다. 전국에서 신입생을 뽑기 때문에 입학 경쟁이 높다는 것이 학교의 인기를 증명한다. 글로벌 리더를 꿈꾸는 학생이라면 청심국제중고등학교에 도전해 보는 것도 좋을 듯하다.

청심국제중고등학교에 대한 이미지라면 ‘공부 잘하는 학생들이 모인 학교’가 첫번째로 떠오른다. 학습량이 많고 동아리 활동의 여유는 없을 것이라는게 일반적인 인식이다. 그러나 기자단이 직접 청심국제교를 탐방한 결과는 기존의 선입견과 달랐다. 청심국제교는 학생들의 자발적 참여를 통해 개성있는 자기계발을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있었다.

현재 청심국제교의 동아리 수는 130여개에 달한다. 총 학생수가 600명인 점을 고려하면 상당히 많은 숫자다. 댄스, 방송국, 잡지발행, 요리에서부터 국악, 록밴드, 요가에 이르기까지 학생들이 흥미를 갖는 주제라면 어느 분야라도 동아리 활동이 가능하다. 학생들은 클럽 활동을 통해 다양한 경험을 하고 학습 스트레스를 해소 할 수 있다.

청심국제교의 또 다른 특징은 전교생을 대상으로 태권도를 가르친다는 점이다. 태권도는 국위선양을 하고 정신과 자세를 지키는데 유용하다는 것이 학교 관계자의 설명이다. 학교 측은 이외에도 골프, 패러글라이딩, 승마, 조정과 같은 체육 활동을 장려한다.

국제교류 활동은?
전세계 명문학교와 실질적 소통

주니어 기자단이 지난 19일 청심국제중고등학교를 탐방 취재했다. 청심은 2006년 개교 이래 수준 높은 교육과 입시 성과 등으로 많은 사람들의 관심을 집중시키고 있는 학교이다. 기자단은 청심만이 가지고 있는 특별함이 무엇인지에 대해 많은 궁금증을 가지고 출발했다. 특히 관심을 끄는 부분은 청심과 외국 명문교 및 단체 간의 국제교류 활동이다.

청심국제중고등학교는 대한민국 교육의 국제화라는 시대적 요구에 따라 글로벌 인재를 양성하겠다는 ‘ACG’ 3대 목표를 가지고 있다. 국제적 리더를 양성하겠다는 포부에 맞게 학생들에게 다양한 채널을 통한 국제적 소통의 기회를 제공하고 있다.

청심은 한국 최초로 ‘라운드스퀘어(Round Square)’에 가입한 학교다. 라운드스퀘어는 5대륙의 108개국 명문학교와 네트워크를 통해 협력하는 세계 연합이다. 청심은 영국의 해로스쿨(Harrow School) 등 명문 고등학교와 학술 활동교류, 호주의 핌블 레이디스 칼리지(Pymble Ladies College)와 재생에너지 연구경력을 갖고 있다. 중국 칭화고등학교, 대만 텅차오 학교와의 교류 활동 등의 실적을 자랑한다.

청심국제교는 자매결연 외에도 다양한 국제 교류 활동을 진행하고 있다. 매년 7월 미국대학 입학관계자들과 세계고등학교 카운셀러들이 주최하는 OACAC(Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling) 컨퍼런스에 참여해 최신 입학정보를 수집하고 학생들에게 최선의 교육방향을 제시한다.
